In leadership conversations, authenticity<\/em> is often spoken about as though it\u2019s simple \u2014 as though we all naturally know who we are and what our \u201cauthentic selves\u201d stand for. But living authentically, especially in leadership, is rarely simple. It asks us to be self-aware, honest, and willing to be seen \u2014 even when that\u2019s uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Journey Towards Authenticity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve spent more than 25 years intentionally getting to know who I am \u2014 and yet, even now, there are days when I still question whether what I\u2019m doing or how I\u2019m showing up is truly authentic<\/em>, or if I\u2019m quietly slipping into pleasing others or fitting into expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also days when I don\u2019t particularly like my \u201cauthentic\u201d self. To be real isn\u2019t always comfortable or polished. Some days, authenticity looks like being direct, assertive, challenging \u2014 even confronting or avoidant, insecure and passive aggressive. But those parts are no less true, and no less valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That led me to ask: Where does authenticity \u2014 with all its good and bad \u2014 fit into leadership?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After years of reflection and coaching hundreds of leaders, I\u2019ve come to see that this healthy struggle to be real is an essential part of growth. Authenticity isn\u2019t a fixed state; it\u2019s an evolving practice. Life, with its challenges, detours, and lessons, constantly nudges us to refine how we show up \u2014 to become stronger, wiser, and more grounded in who we really are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At our core, certain things remain stable \u2014 our values, our personality, our energy. These are the anchors of our authentic self. What changes is how<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong>we express them: how we lead, communicate, and take accountability for the impact we have on others. And in a world that moves faster than ever \u2014 where results, delivery, and deadlines are often pressing \u2014 the question isn\u2019t how we can find the time to reconnect with ourselves. It\u2019s<\/em> how can we not?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because when we lose touch with who we are, we lose our sense of purpose and our ability to lead with integrity. Authenticity is not a luxury; it\u2019s the foundation of accountable, effective leadership. In this way authenticity and accountability are deeply intertwined. To be truly accountable, we must be willing to take responsibility for who we are, how we show up, and the impact we have on others.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accountability Anchors Authenticity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authenticity without accountability can drift into self-expression without responsibility. Accountability without authenticity can feel rigid and transactional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
